She knows little about the northern lands, less about the magic their wise ones work. She has seen their dancing priestesses fall into ecstatic trances to dream dreams sent by their goddess. She has heard whispers of dark, strange things with names she cannot comprehend lurking in the forests and seen the Northmen hang witches’ charms from the doorposts and the lintels.
And yet, there is an earthy smell to the old woman’s craft as she tends to Xenia’s poisoned wound. Orekh and its magic stink of brimstone and charred flesh and blackened bone and the smokes of Hell.
